September and October

Its amazing quite how quickly time slips through your fingers when you are feeling neck deep in projects and the turmoil of your final year of education has begun.

So far this semester I've particularly enjoyed the "Painting for Illustrators" course that has been offered. The more I paint the more I realize that I can paint quickly enough for majors projects to be done in a more traditional media than just purely digital, although that love affair will never end.

This semester appears to be dedicated to my depictions of monsters and deities  I cannot escape their grip for some odd reason. Here is a smattering of what I've been up to:

These two are from my Character Design course, I had to drop it due to an already heavy work load from the 5 other courses I needed to pass, it was fun while it lasted. We had to design a pixel sprite and extrapolate outward into other things.

These gems come from illustrating a Monster definition of "Krampus", The vignette could be dropped into any old format and the full image could be a full page illustration. This semesters emphasis is on "context".

We even got to do an assignment based around the Hobbit Movie competition. In hindsight there is a lot more I could have done with dear 'ole Smaug, here.

The image on the left was done in conjunction with defining Horror Illustration, while the illustration on the right was done for this months Coast City Comics gallery theme "Eye of the Beholder; A dungeons and Dragons Art Show". It is an illustration of the current character I am playing a campaign through with, she is called Gull, a Tiefling Warlock, pretty enjoyable.

Currently I am working on my business cards as well, alongside a poster illustration for Stephen King's "The Stand". I enjoyed the use of flat textures and colors in "The Hookman" so I wanted to try again (below).

Halloween came and passed recently, and it was impossible to pass up an opportunity for costumery, here is what I managed to make
Just after completion
Test Drive
All complete!
Its an Oni Costume, hopefully for the future I can add some ears, clawed hands and perhaps more appropriate clothing, I was dressed basically as pirate or gypsy of some sort but with an odd mask.
Too bad its hard to see and breathe in that mask!
Unfortunately I couldn't wear my glasses with it and Halloween was far warmer than I thought it would be,  take off the mask, add a crown of flowers and boom! Instant Gypsy Ghoul or Sugar Skull. The painting you see to my right is a preview of the next update; Paintings etc!

A little bit of everything

Its a snow day and classes/workstudy are cancelled for the day so I figured I would take a few pictures of the Art I had laying around the house. I sincerely thought I had more hanging around here.

But first, check out the snow! It's coming down at a good clip, I do not look forward to walking outside in it later, but it will be worth it.

So here are a few figures I had stashed under my bed. I prefer the quick shading with lines in the 2nd drawing, but I suppose its more of a challenge to be 'painterly'. We had Mid Term Critique this week in Figure Drawing, and I need to work on finding the core shadows.

Click the images to enlarge them :)

Then over in my Mixed media course we are working on 16"x16" compositions for an exquisite corpse piece. We are to make three compositions, but I only like this one. It will be a mix of colored pencils and washes.

process

I made a triptych of chrysanthemums a while back using complimentary colors in each of the different panels. Also, I drew Batman in a bathtub. I find the Art that I find the most enjoyable to make is making it for the purpose of making someone question either what you were thinking, make them smile for a moment or both. Some call it a shallow reason to make Art, but I'm not a very Highbrow person. Perhaps someday my sister can help me define things about my Art, she will be an art historian after.

Eventually I'll get these to my Mom.
Bat(h)man.
Also, you should totally watch this music video. Enjoy the snow New England, it had to happen eventually, so why not March.

The Crew

Meet the rest of the Captains crew. Once again, these guys are about a year old, but I am proud of most of their designs. Thanks for the Digital Animation Class MECA, you should have run it again!

This is Gramps, he's the Captains' roguish Father, he was the Captain of the boat before his son, Since he has paid his dues and lived incredibly long for a Pirate he expects to be provider for and basically worshiped. Once known as the Sea Pickle, Ezra Hathaway was a shrewd bargainer, a ruthless freebooter, and a man with a soft spot for puns.

Afzal Sah'Haal is a mercenary and in charge the crew. What they eat, when they sleep, who's on deck, not to mention his unique fighting style. He is a man of few words, but when he speaks everyone will listen.

Lucinda Marion is the Navigator aboard the Hathaways' Galleon. Captain Hathaway found her in a Brothel in the islands and noticed she was quick witted as well as intimidating.

Silas Dobrou once tried to trick Ezra out of his winnings at a game of Aces. It ended in a city wide man hunt and a job offer to be Master of the Coin aboard the ship, only the new recruits will play cards with him.

And this is Zee, Gramps constant companion. He was brought aboard as a guard dog and was once vicious, loosing his eye to taking out a man attempting to take Grampa Ezra out with a mace. He now sits at the Captains table with Gramps and his son.

The Captain

 Meet Captain Hathawy.

This is a piece from about a year ago. I like working difitally with lots of texture overlays and characters you can give a story to pretty easily. I cannot write a story, but I can give a character emotions, tendencies and a little background!

He also has a crew, they will be coming later.
